چکیده

Abstract Extensive beds of the deep-sea mussel Bathymodiolus mauritanicus (currently also known as Gigantidas ) linked to active cold seeps related fissure-like activity on Al Gacel mud volcano, Gulf Cádiz, were filmed and sampled for first time during oceanographic expedition SUBVENT-2 aboard R/V Sarmiento de Gamboa. volcano is one up 80 fluid venting submarine structures (mud volcanoes volcano/diapir complexes) identified in Cádiz result explosive hydrocarbon-enriched fluids sourced from deep seated reservoirs. Evolutionary Process of Deep-Sea Bathymodiolus Mussels

BACKGROUND Since the discovery of deep-sea chemosynthesis-based communities, much work has been done to clarify their organismal and environmental aspects. However, major topics remain to be resolved, including when and how organisms invade and adapt to deep-sea environments; whether strategies for invasion and adaptation are shared by different taxa or unique to each taxon; how organisms exten...

Cold seeps of the deep Gulf of Mexico: Community structure and biogeographic comparisons to Atlantic equatorial belt seep communities

Quantitative collections of tubewormand mussel-associated communities were obtained from 3 cold seep sites in the deep Gulf of Mexico: in Atwater Valley at 1890m depth, in Alaminos Canyon at 2200m depth, and from the Florida Escarpment at 3300m depth. A total of 50 taxa of macroand megafauna were collected including 2 species of siboglinid tubeworms and 3 species of bathymodiolin mussels. In ge...

Species Distribution and Population Connectivity of Deep-Sea Mussels at Hydrocarbon Seeps in the Gulf of Mexico

Hydrocarbon seepage is widespread and patchy in the Gulf of Mexico, and six species of symbiont containing bathymodiolin mussels are found on active seeps over wide and overlapping depth and geographic ranges. We use mitochondrial genes to discriminate among the previously known and a newly discovered species and to assess the connectivity among populations of the same species in the northern G...

Dual symbiosis in a Bathymodiolus sp. mussel from a methane seep on the Gabon continental margin (Southeast Atlantic): 16S rRNA phylogeny and distribution of the symbionts in gills.

Deep-sea mussels of the genus Bathymodiolus (Bivalvia: Mytilidae) harbor symbiotic bacteria in their gills and are among the dominant invertebrate species at cold seeps and hydrothermal vents. An undescribed Bathymodiolus species was collected at a depth of 3,150 m in a newly discovered cold seep area on the southeast Atlantic margin, close to the Zaire channel. Transmission electron microscopy...
